Your air conditioner has a substance called a refrigerant, which serves as the system’s “blood”. It is an integral component of the unit, playing an important role in the cooling process. Unfortunately, prevailing issues from within the equipment can cause it to leak out, leading to extensive damage and inadequate cooling if not addressed properly.
The condensate pan is the part of your air conditioning system that collects dripping condensation and moves it away via a drain line. An overflowing condensate pan can cause problems such as mold and corrosion, or even damage to the air conditioner’s electrical components.
R-22 is perhaps the most popular air conditioner refrigerant today. It’s in the hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) group, a series of chemicals that replaced the notoriously ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). But HCFCs are just a Band-Aid solution, and, like all “bandages”, they must be changed eventually.
