HVAC Tips to Keep Your Pets Cool & Comfortable This Summer
Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. However, caring for them is a big responsibility. Among other things, you have to make sure they’re well-fed and well-groomed. Also, as a pet owner, you shouldn’t overlook your HVAC system; it should be in top condition to ensure their comfort and safety. Here Schmitt Heating & Air Conditioning, your leading AC and heating system repair contractor, shares tips to keep your pets cool and comfortable this summer. Change the filter regularly. Having a dog or cat around means dealing with fur and dander. Since you’re going to be using your air conditioner or heat pump to cool the indoors, make sure its air filter is clean. Filters trap dust, dirt and animal dander so they don’t get inside the HVAC equipment. Eventually, however, you’ll have to clean or change your filter, which should be done at least once a month if you own pets or up to every three months for non-pet households. This way, you ensure the health and performance of your HVAC system and keep your home comfortable for your pets. Protect the outdoor unit. The outdoor unit of your heating and air conditioning system could be in danger if your pet freely roams the yard. Some dogs, for instance, tend to paw and scratch surfaces, which could lead to damage to the outdoor unit’s fins and condenser coils. There’s also the likelihood of your pet urinating on it. The last thing you want is for your HVAC system to quit working because of a damaged outdoor unit, so be sure to place a barrier around the equipment for protection. Never rely on the fan. It’s convenient to have a fan as a backup for comfort, but this doesn’t cool pets as effectively as it does people. Remember that dogs sweat primarily through their feet, so keep the AC or heat pump on cooling mode, especially before you leave, to keep your pet comfortable. Give them a cooling body wrap or place a cooling mat nearby, as well, to keep them from overheating indoors.
